I remember her always having problems with how stubborn and 'ready' I thought I was. I was totally in mindspace that I could've been singing for P-Mac age 11 in my disco pants and crop top.

All this slacking will catch up with me later in the week, I'm off to see my lovely Stephen's Brackets play Phoenix tonight and gonna catch Master of Ribongia, been scoping him out for some production. For the moment however I'm just slacking around, enjoying my latest hit of Hillbilly Heroin and wanting to go swimming with that beautiful boy again. Deep sea diving and get lost at the world's end. I've learnt to hold my breath in whole new ways. I could free range dive for days. As far as I can see, you are the ocean, and I'm good at drowning, the morning will follow and I won't remember. Feels like I've been here, been here forever.

PERSPECTIVE LYRIQUE - a 1024 initiative

On today's agenda is a voice-interacting video-mapping installation based in France's Lyon for the Festival of Lights,
a celebration of Jesus' Moms, Mary, after she helped them out through some tough plague times waaay back in the day.

"This uniquely Lyonnaise tradition dictates that every house place candles along the outsides of all the windows to produce a spectacular effect throughout the streets. The festival, which includes other activities based on light, usually lasts 4 days, with the peak of activity occurring on the 8th. The two main focal points of activity are typically the Basilica of Fourvière which is lit up in different colours, and the Place des Terreaux, which hosts a different light show each year."

I'm exploring this project put together by 1024 Architecture that CREATES DIGITAL MOTION.

This project works live for the audience, offering them the opportunity to put their voices forward to entirely transform the architecture of the prestigious “Grand Théâtre” Celestins. With it's choir, gospel-like vocals it distorts and completely transforms the environment in a spooky and yet completely neat way.

Volcanic Flesh In Five Acts

This score is a texture-based visual soundscape that works in acts to introduce more layers as the tension of the story builds, emulating the process of a volcano erupting. I explored the soft and almost human textures in natural processes through the arrangement and development.

The piece moves up a y-axis of time and rising dynamics, developing and rising upward to to the highest level of frequency. It plays with a 4/4 metre, BPM of 130, the average BPM of a healthy heartbeat for a young adult. The duration of the notes is determined by interpretation based on their shape and size. The legend is read as a guide to understanding the layout and process of the piece.

This work began as an exploration of the human canvas, transformed into volcanic skin. It was based on a small piece of Hugh Prather's prose, "In last night's hot bed I was flesh and afterward soul" and the idea of molten change both physical and symbolic.

I wanted to layer deep percussive sounds and build them, a bass drum imitating a beating heart and introduce human tones, sound and speech. I also wanted a melodic element that would imitate the sign of changing life rich and sharp, with the use of the Cello directed to play freeform in the key of A minor.

Each act represents the progress of a volcanic eruption, moving from the foreground out-of-focus low-frequency sound layer into the rising background wind chimes at higher pitch and frequencies.

Act I - Awakening

Low-Frequency beginning based on rhythm and percussion. The bass drum plays starts the piece, with Timpani overlaying rhythms, a snare played with a chain that adds an echo.

Act II – Bubbling and Arising

A Gong resounds to mark the wake of life, with the triangle introducing a higher frequency, with delicate textures, introducing the fragility of this eruption.

Act III -Pressure Building

The Cello is introduced, with rich tones, playing freeform and wild, as a vocal chant is added with a rising exclamation of a sung 'ah'.

Act IV - Explosion

A Crash cymbal introduces the explosion, the higher frequencies represented in grey/white and the lower drum tones in black, a Shaker is played wildly out of time to represent the ash and debris.

Act V - Ash Falling

A tom drum rings out the Volcano's last movement, as the Wind Chimes, present in the white lines of the sky, introduce the calm. The Vocals speak for the movement of the piece and the Finger Cymbal sings out the last of the chaos in a simple sound that is touched to be played.

Since the moment my pal DJ One Knob first rung out my eardrums and hard drive with UK-based duo Mount Kimbie, so began my growing fascination with a mysterious sound that experimented combining the heavy dissonant beats of Dubstep and Hip-Hop with the soaring spatial elements of ambient, minimalist melody and field recordings that were so human in their texture they made my eyes roll back in my head and my senses reel. I soon found myself elbowing through Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory on a Thursday night past the sea of ambient electronic junkies and geniuses, attempting to hustle a spot front stage and eager to see what this ‘Post-Dubstep’ duo would bring to the live forum.

Sydney’s Seekae were hypnotizing with new material from their +Dome album, the room throbbing with glitch sampling, Hip Hop-styled drums, other-world soundscapes crescendoed by the energy of full-kit live drumming and a taste of what was to come. They connected with their audience were forged through the energy of how they triggered their samplers and synths, bearing teeth at any notion of a laptop performance being cold, there seemed a mood and energy rising from the audience. Finishing with ‘Wool’, which sampled the vocals of Ivan Vizintin of Sydney’s Ghoul, the room sweltered as the delay increased and the beat dropped. Mount Kimbie had certainly chosen their match. We elbowed our way further, determined to make it front stage, squeezing our way through as the curtains edged to the side and our faces were lit.

Mount Kimbie, formed in 2008, Kai Campos and Dominic Maker were a pair of British lads brought together by South Bank University and raised on Hip Hop, Electronica, Dub and Indie, initially trying their hands in the UK’s Dubstep scene, a genre which according to Music Radar has “Broken down into two broad categories, with dark, melancholy, low-energy beats on one side and aggressive, bass-heavy dance music on the other.”[iii] They soon realized their penchant for an experimental interpretation of this sound, known as ‘post-dubstep’, but also incorporating the bass-focused elements typical of dance Dubstep, crossing the divide of the genre to form a sound their own. Mount Kimbie’s Kai explains in an interview with Zero Inch, “It's like any dance music you know - it diversifies until people don't know what the word means any more. It destroys itself, and then something else happens…we just want to remain relevant…not to think about Dubstep but just about yourself.”[iv]

Their involvement in this scene, a newer genre of the 2000’s pertinent to the digital electronic music generation that dominated the packed-out Sydney venue, started in 2006 in London at nights like DMZ and FWD>> with DJ’s like Burial and Skream. They involved themselves with this virally-spread genre by posting work on dupstep forums, eventually being picked up by heavyweight Scuba, signed to his Hotflush label and producing their first EP’s. These earlier EP’s reveal their style in ambient and found-sound sample layering, slower with an average of 138-142 BPM tempo, which create an emotional post-rock mood when combined with re-pitched vocals and chord progressions. This mood and exploration of tones in percussive elements is most present in the track ‘Maybes’. This piece is built around a slowed harmonic guitar sample that builds and glides into a discordant rhythmic arrangement of clicks, glass and cowbells, affected with reverb to create a wide, ethereal space. Playground Mag’s Javier Blánquez considers this sound “Primarily a story of spaces…which depict the sound experience of living in the city and what it´s like to breathe it in 24 hours a day.”[vi] Their most recent debut album release ‘Crooks and Lovers’ breaks these elements down into shorter songs with a focus on each facet of this genre-crossing act. http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=5415203294068102309 - _edn11

My mind dived into the waves of texhttp://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=5415203294068102309 - _edn10ture resonating off the stage and booming through the PA, I noticed the sharp contrast of harmony and dissonance in the samples arranged vertically in the soundscape using experimental techniques influenced by noise and sound artists Brian Eno, Tim Hecker, Fennesz, Philip Glass and Grouper’s “Reverb-soaked, dirty guitar parts - that almost 'recorded-in-a-toilet' kind of sound.”[vii] The beats in the track ‘Tunnelvision’ have been hand-crafted from field recordings, “You can take a lot more pleasure in forming a drum beat out of those samples than dragging and dropping a kick drum, hi-hat and snare” emphasizes Dom, transforming sound into song, detailing their process of recording in wind-tunnels under roads connecting to the sea to capture unique experimental pitched sounds, “We sung down there, threw stones at the wall and recorded loads of claps…Even the smallest little cracks and things like that have this nicer sort of reverb sound when compared to an electronic effect.” Re-pitching discordant sounds in this track created elements of harmony from harsh live noise samples, meshing it with soulful guitar and clipped, rhythmically placed vocals. The track ‘Before I Move Off’ glides from de-tuned noise into pitched rhythmic melody through the atonality in the opening guitar sample, which Alex Ross refers to in Schoenberg’s use as describing “Convulsive emotion”[viii].

Since the digital instrument is an all-encompassing device of writing, producing, mixing and performing contemporary music, Kai relayhttp://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=5415203294068102309 - _edn11ing “Production and writing [as] almost the same thing,” an act like Mount Kimbie relies on the presentation and element of roughness in live sampling and djing to make them ‘live’. They had the technical show-goer’s minds calculating and buzzing, eager to learn their secrets of their set-up. Their rig consisted of a Native Instruments Maschine for looping and sampling, MIDI keyboard, running through a Korg KAOSS Effects Pad http://www.blogger.com/post-create.g?blogID=5415203294068102309 - _edn10loaded with samples, with a guitar running through a Line 6 JM4 Looper Pedal, insisting they “always write extra bits for playing live”. They also used a live snare and ride cymbal that when hit by either of the duo would arouse primal roars and ripples of thrusts from the crowded mass. Robert Henke coins the live digital instrument and computer performance as ‘the invisible instrument’, one that is not played in real-time; mysterious and unknown to the audience, claiming that the composer instead becomes “A controller, a conductor and a system operator, defining which element needs to be placed where on a timeline. This process is of an entirely different nature from actually performing music…much closer to architecture, painting, sculpting, or engineering.”[ix]

Mount Kimbie throttled the room with their bass-driven sounds tuned into song, raising the dynamics, hitting the roof hard and still managing spaces for moments of contemplation, head-banging above us, sweating nuggets and spilling drinks across the soiled stage and brought to life the soul in 21^st century experimental electronic music known as 'Post-Dubstep'.

there was something very perverse about getting onto a train headed to Kings Cross and locking eyes with the very grown grocery man from Coles Concord engulfed in his bible passage riding alongside his 70-odd white haired mother.

I don't think we will ever really be able to understand our planet. A piece of crust breaks off of a plate, gets lodged under another and suddenly the little cubby house cities and foolproof infrastructures we've built for ourselves threaten to melt us down and feed us nuclear waste. There's no easy way of saying 'national disaster'. I fear for everyone over in Japan, especially my lady love <3 get back safe, I can't save you when you're so far away. King Khan & BBQ Show @ Sydney Opera House

Sometimes a show is so bad, it's damn good. Despite sound problems (cheers Sydney Opera House), internal band problems, definite anger problems, and kicking up a shitstorm with the sound guys which included diva antics like throwing the peace-offering wine, King Khan still managed to put the shake down into our souls, spit in our faces and rub it in with sweaty southern beats. And make out with incredibly hot babes. Wrapping it all up in a punk-gospel chant, with a few Black Panther references, hypnotizing the audience with his pyschedelic Canadian soul. This man is truly a force to be reckoned with, but nothing without the musicianship and Octopus costumery of his beloved BBQ.

Vivid Live Festival in Sydney brought curators/history makers Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson to our shores along with an implosion of brilliant acts ala Melt Banana, Boris, the dirty and delightful King Khan.

Poetry & patterns were transposed across the top sails, made our tacky icon feel quite beautiful.

The paint was beautiful;

an acrid scent that I knew would only deteriorate my lungs if I lingered longer but the mood just kept me. I stared into the displays all around the walls. I was very quiet and careful with my speech, each word would be magnified in such a simple silence.

A perfectly square piece of glass was the center piece of this modest room and even dollops of colour were layed out all around its borders. I watched myself loom above my reflection, framed by a kaleidoscope of colour and caught in the crystal cracks in the glass.

I wanted to know more, much more, why everything was and what it was doing where. This was such a clean space and I saw its secrets immediately. I looked up at the glass of wine being handed to me. I knew that staying and staring a little longer could find me trouble, but I blinked and thought it safer to be silent. I had already said to much without ever saying anything.

Kylie's new track has made its way into my wavelengths and I am quite sure that it marks another beautiful moment in our time together. Produced by Jim Eliot and Stuart Price, the Aphrodite album written with artists like Calvin Harris, Luciana and Sebastian Ingrosso, it's looking to become another classic of hers. I love her to pieces because she is such a mstr of her pop-divadom, a genre we know with some serious paradox and still able to create classics in the days of the fading pop hit. Kylie's tone is breathy-delicious and even though she harps incessantly about the same 'forget everything, make love, dance' shite, she knows her music and her shit, is a total pro I worship her all the same. Was trawling along the internets last night for stylists and discovered Sydney-based Angela Fredericks, who designs for her own label called Sulkenka on Godzilla Goes to Paris, and puts together some truly amazing stuff. I love the boldness in the colour and the leather and crisp white. mm-mm. The teletubby headpiece also brought back some fond memory trippin' ha.

So I'm thinking a lot about fate, space, sound and circumstance lately and the creation of dimension in sound.

John Cage, of '4"33' fame, infers that an item or image that is reproduced can always be affected and viewed another way by natural circumstance, natural light. An American Avant-guarde composer born the son of an inventor and a journalist, Cage is a historic figure in the medium of ambient composition and sonic art. He remained a prominent figure in the arts scene all through his years, from 30's-90's, and believed in their blurring into one another. In between his accociations with impressionists of the 50's like Pollock and Duchamp, he has achieved so much incredible work and has imparted a legacy that has compelled me to begin following the processed of his work. He talks about the “Activity of sound” in itself, the intention of the medium of sound, of which has been on my mind lately.

Another of Bhawsar's works, The Multi-Headed Hydra, which is created by a computer accessing words from blogs online at random from the starting concept of a single word.

This led me on to discover Jeroen Holthuis whose work was featured on NEXT NATURE, a new favourite blog of mine that specializes in highlighting compelling inventions assisting in man's interactions with nature. His 2009 piece Bitquid literally transfers bits into liquid atoms by computer through an analogue network of tiny hoses which then transfers into an image on a screen. It shows the manual processes of creating an image from matter. It makes a constant 'ticking' sound that gives the machine life and time. Really a fantastic reworking of old and new technologies and such an amazing blog.

Have just returned from Maitland's Groovin The Moo Festival and am posting a quick update to let it be known;

I am in love- deep, deep love with Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend. His playful smile and sincere gentlemanly swagger had me in a frenzy throughout the set. My first Vampire Weekend experience was a flawless one; a little camp, with some old school rock 'n' roll moves, a bit jungle, some dance and a whole lot of clean pop.

KATE HOLDEN: Well, a nice book, a really lovely book, is a beautiful object. There are books or poems that I have I would like to take sentences from and carve them on the walls, you know, 6ft high, huge letters, like, to bake them into biscuits and eat them. I'd like to, you know, have a bath in these words. I just love them so much.

KATE HOLDEN: A whole new part of my life started when I was about 21. I moved out of home. I lived in St Kilda with friends. I was feeling good and then I finished university, and kind of just fell, flomp, into the world. Because I didn't know what I was going to do after that. I'd never planned anything. And I didn't realise at the time, but I think I was a little bit freaked by this, that I didn't know what I was going to do. And it was only a few months into my first year out of university that I started using heroin. And then everything began to change.

GEOFFREY HOLDEN, FATHER: How could she be so stupid?! How could somebody with half a brain who knows that certain drugs, the hard drugs, are difficult to get off, how could they bother going into them? I could not understand my daughter anymore. I couldn't understand how she could have done that. I couldn't understand how she would continue to do it.

The road to junkiedom and prostitution is littered with cliches. Kate Holden’s memoir – the tale of a good Melbourne girl who becomes a heroin-addicted prostitute – mostly avoids the romanticism that often plagues such stories. She’s not averse to shock value and In My Skin contains occasionally lurid moments, but not at the cost of genuine fidelity to the finer points of her experience. If her reasons for turning to smack and sex work read like indulgent undergraduate experimentation, that’s because she was a restless student, eager to test her boundaries. And if the junkie section – revisiting again and again the grind of scoring, the bliss of the hit – drifts along aimlessly, it’s because junkie life is like that.

Holden’s deft writing is most resonant when she traces her move from hustling on the streets to working in brothels. She comments as insider and outsider, as prostitute and writer: “The more I saw of the meek, the bored, the frustrated, the more I glimpsed how our society works.” One client becomes a friend; another finds her hitting the panic button. The vulnerable camaraderie among the prostitutes makes for compelling reading. “The girls were my social life ... a strange little community, brimming with intimacy, blocked by secrets.” In this world, Holden finds an ambivalent emancipation, perhaps the only sort. She concedes a few regrets, mostly to do with her long-suffering parents. But ultimately she’s not after absolution or redemption.

“I sometimes wondered, with my legs spread over the face of some eager man, if I felt regret for the invasion of my secret spaces.” Her answer? “I am still me.”

The Birthday Girl

I never imagined two years down the track that I would be sitting opposite someone I swore I would never see again in a ring of smoke, reliving a hellish experience and kind of falling in love with her danger again; but here we are outside a Burwood café locking eyes. An accidental knee brush, four cigarettes, a double shot soy latte and I am all hers. She is inhaling carefully before she releases and begins to speak.

“So what do you want to know?” She is dressed far more casually for the occasion than I am, wearing a loose greyscale shirt and her work pants. A beep goes off on one of the two mobiles she has with her, she picks it up, examining it before sighing.

“Tenants, more fucking hot water problems.” I am amused and honestly quite impressed at the amount of technology she seems to have acquired since we last met, carting it about in her mocha coloured crocodile-leather handbag and matching wallet set. Good god, she’s terrifying.

I smile widely, “Oh it’s fine, answer it whenever you need to”, We take the time to ready ourselves as we slow into chat about our adventures of the past years, attempting to reconcile the past and what we choose of our present to share with one another. She talks about her property management work, and the night starts to warm as she knows what’s coming. I ready the turn. It is eerie how simple this is.

We met during school in Sydney’s Inner West and I knew her all through our final year, but this was not about reliving of the stabs of teen rebellion. Those things were distant now, as I’d never imagined they could be. I noticed the strange haze of that surreal night already starting to engulf us and our outdoor table. I felt a slight of panic at her apparent cool but I had to remind myself again that this was her playing field. The night had been, as she so delicately put it, “One hell of a time.”

I lay it out as easy as I can, meeting her anticipation of the telephone conversation earlier in the day, “Well, I’m just going to run over what I’ve got, I guess you can just add anything if you need.“ She looks amused and inches forward in her seat with a slight, dipping her head in and joining my creeping smile.

I remind myself to keep my distance, “Now this might not be easy, cause we gotta go over all the details and there’s stuff you won’t remember, but I’m just gonna re-tell what I know and it’s okay cos I mean I can just -”

She cuts in, “Let’s do it”. Reaching out swift across the table she twists her cigarette molten into the bed of the cool steel ashtray, shooting out a determined look across at me. Turning to her Blackberry, she clicks it onto silent, shifts in her seat and turns to me completely. Last minute I wonder if this really is a good idea,

“I’m ready”.

Penrith seemed like the perfect option because she was living on a farm around there at the time. When she first called and told me, I laughed for a while before realizing that I was actually expected to travel the 44 600 m required to go. Something felt off about this. There was a new crowd she was hanging with, a woman called Toni who she’d met in a Richmond hospital and with her parent’s financial blessing, the latest thrill was training horses on her property. “Toni’s got a kid called Tanya who’s got a whole other bunch of kids who lived on the property as well,” she informs me. Apparently an ex-Flamenco Club dancing stripper of Spanish and Aboriginal descent, this woman sounded interesting enough. She sat and revealed to me now that a Hell’s Angel gang leader fathers Tanya’s children, a man with “A pot belly, tattoo’s and lots of jewellery” she laughed. Sure, it was a little off, but not that much out of the recent order of things.

Five weeks earlier she’d invited me for a hang out that very quickly turned into a post-release stalking and car chase of a nurse she “didn’t like”. A mistrust had been building in me; I was feeling a little taken advantage of in the past months. Still, I slapped on my shimmy dress, put of a slick of red lipstick and got determined to have a damn good night out in Penrith. In retrospect, I probably should have turned back when I looked up to pay for my stick of gum and the woman working at the M4 Minchinbury BP smiled at me with the glimmer of a tiny gold tooth.

At the edge of 18 I’ll admit I was no real expert of the party circuit of greater Sydney. A simple Google search will turn up that there’s no real competition for night life in the city of Penrith Valley, with it’s party drag of High St and main contenders Penrith Panthers, ‘The Venue’ and The Embassy Hotel, who list Unpaid Debt as one of the many rock bands they’ve hosted. It does however boast a $25,000 24 hour speaker systerm installed to keep peace by churning out hits of the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s on its main street. The day before the party a friend had laughed over the phone at the news, “Goodluck man. Wow, who the hell has a party in Penrith anyway?”

Glancing out the window at the youths congregating around suburban cars out front of a nightclub, I was beginning to wonder the same thing. Obvious attempts had been made by the council to forge it a new identity as a CBD in the West. The nightclub’s location atop a shopping centre car park confirmed this for me.

Flipping through reviews of The Mojo Lounge reveals an unsettling in restaurant-goers who found the mismatched background party music and video-clips played on plasmas “disconcerting” and the mango special cocktail still tasting of the “can it clearly came from”. Frankly, it was all a little tacky as I wandered in that evening, comfortably late.

The sight I was greeted with was omen number one; a sure-fire sign that turning back now was still an option, as sitting visible at the first table atop the stairs was an old friend who I had managed to avoid for months due to her being even more bad news than Birthday Girl herself. Shudder.

The Mojo Lounge was a dual-level club-style restaurant beside a nightclub formerly known as The Bloc, which before its close in 2007 rated at number 17 in the top 100 most violent venues in Sydney. According to word of mouth it had been owned previously by entrepreneur Justin Hemmes of Merivale, owner of bar enterprise all over Sydney’s city; Ivy, Tank and Establishment, a detail the new management was reluctant discuss. She laughs, insisting the owner is actually a client of hers, Tony, and the restaurant was one she had nights out at all the time, not so much since.

I stepped up the stairs slightly fazed and it all happened like a song and dance, I stood dumbfounded as birthday girl and friends sung “C’mon guys, just be friends” dragging me over to the table, introducing me to Aaron, Dean, Vicky, Kayla, Josh, Toni and an array of characters I was sure to forget with almost immediacy. Jamming me beside the old pal I was suddenly met with the flash of cameras and the sound of laughter as they added “Smile!” As part of the birthday festivities I had somehow accidentally assigned myself the role of the party piñata.

I skulled my first glass of white in a minute flat. With the lubrication of a little drink everything seemed to flow, briskly telling the party pooper beside me to fuck off, I picked up my glass and found a new seat across the room from two girls who dazzled me with worried faces and warm stories of the old Birthday Girl. It was all bang, chop, sing, party for a while there as I moved about the room. I eventually found myself at the table of these new friends and was being most entertained by a man with a drawl and a lisp; this was the fantastic Aaron that I had been told all about. He seemed nice enough, telling funny stories. I got my first glimpse at Toni; a butch woman with caramel skin, dripping gold jewellery and a large party dress, smiling quietly but looking a little guarded. I waved a hello to the parents of Birthday Girl seated at the table behind ours. Lovely people. Italians and owners of a home-grown real estate agency that encouraged Birthday Girl to take her part in the family business. Only months before the father had been diagnosed with a form of Parkinson’s that was quite dire, it had been a very rough year, but we ignored it all for the 18^th celebrations.

In between the mingling, the smoking, the drinking and perhaps a few renditions of ‘Happy birthday’ I had hit a point of drunken bliss. I wandered into the club next door and had a scoff at the people knowing full well that I was destined to burn up that dance floor very shortly. Trotting back in I took a seat beside the birthday girl and turned to her smearing a smile across my face. Everything was fine fun and this place wasn’t so bad. There was some sort of commotion across the other side of the room with our new friends who were leaving and it all started to get a little loud. She tells me that the boy Aaron had begun a vulgar spell he was prone to whilst drunk and high, which the bouncers fired shortly after had helped provide, and begun hitting on a colleague of hers.

From beside me on my right, three seats away, Birthday Girl’s dad takes a hold of the situation which suddenly becomes hostile as the man Aaron got closer and louder. Turning away to reach for my bag and phone when I looked back was met by the view of a glass being swiped at the Father, my heart stopping, as it missed and rolled away. For a moment everything was fine until my brain registered that the second one had hit him and there was blood, screams and sudden panic. There are tables being pulled apart, calls for ambulance and I am suddenly caught in the middle of a cross-fire. What hell was I even doing here? When I looked up Aaron and his gang had fled the scene and half the party had already left.

I was consoling Birthday Girl when she suddenly insisted we had to leave. What? Wouldn’t she stay with the Father? I didn’t even have time to wish them well before I waved goodbye to my bottle of wine and Birthday Girl’s distraught sisters and put focus onto calming her down. There was no question until we slid into the back seat of a red sports car and were suddenly speeding along the freeway. There was country all around and I begun to panic as I realized I had no way of getting home. The friend that volunteered to pick me up later wasn’t answering after dropping me only an hour and a half ago. It’s a very quiet moment in my head when calming the sobbing Birthday Girl, I realize we are stranded in a car with drivers I’ve never met and I started to sense a ‘wrong place at the wrong time’ moment. She writes to me over the noise of the car stereo a message, “Were goin 2 the farm 2 get my stuff”.

Over the past 5 years the council has staged attempts at urbanization to redevelop it from its rural roots, but there is still a lot of farmland everywhere and we were heading right into it. I hadn’t seen a cab anywhere. I’d also never even heard mention of the farm’s address.

At the end of a mammoth drive we arrived at a caravan-like house surrounded by horse paddocks., at “Tadmore Road, Cranebrook” I glimpsed on her phone’s screen. I dragged my jaw along behind us as we shuffled into the house quickly, taking in the ridiculous view that met us inside; two overweight women sat smoking and watching television in a living room with a small child on the knee of the younger and it didn’t take long for me to realize this was Toni and Tanya. I sat down and shut up while we tried to relax for a while, it was almost too much when I realized they were watching Jerry Springer.

The incensed hotheaded hick with the lisp was back in an instant and angrier than before. After telling the friends to piss off, he started to bear into Birthday Girl, getting a little close for comfort, talking all kinds of smack about her Father. Without thought, she pushed him away in defence, he grabbed her back and ripped all down the front of her vintage turquoise Birthday dress hollering and I had kept calm until that point when glimpsing away from the screen, I looked right at him and a fury ignited in me. Roaring up from where I sat on the edge of her seat I stepped forward and heaved him back with all the fire I had. This asshole had ruined the entire night.

While I imagine a girl coming at you in a tassle-covered flapper mini-dress and 5 inch patent platform heels with a beehive wasn’t exactly what he would have normally perceive as a big-time threat, I was feeling pretty mean. Looking right at him in a split second I very quickly knew I was screwed; he was drug-fucked and buzzing out of control. It seems hilarious to us now what a drunken fool I was in that moment. I am told that the first thing he did was give me one “Helluva loud slap”, but I don’t really remember, all I remember was the force of hitting the wall. It was all noise and I just couldn’t get myself off of the wall to fight back and the chorus of shrieking bogan women in the background was giving me a headache and all I wanted to do was for my friend to enjoy her fucking party so we could get the hell out of here. At some point I pushed him back and she pulled me away and we ran out into the kitchen, catching a moment’s breath while they attempted to restrain him in the living room “That crazy motherfucker” was all I could verbalize. It had reached fever pitch and I was spooked. She said nothing.

I knew we didn’t have long, we burst into the study and I had all of my full weight against the door, “Grab all of your shit, we’ve only got minutes.” She was in tears, crying about her horses, her new friends, Toni who was yelling profanities at her throughout, her ruined birthday. I was trying not to get impatient and was more preoccupied with the door, eyeing up a desk chair on my left. In the fluoro lights of this tacky cardboard room I felt myself sobering up a little, absorbed by the shockwaves moving through my body. I had no idea why she didn’t seem as alarmed at the current situation and it was starting to anger me that this entire episode had been her problem that she had dragged me into. I was tiring more when she asked me to call her phone and the first big push came against the door and I knew this was going to be harder than I thought. We were trapped in this tiny room and I hurried her to jam all her things into her sports bag, eyeing the desk chair and imagining a small plan. I just had to hold out until he got tired and make sure he didn’t get a foot in. If he did I would block him with the chair. As I grit my teeth panicked, she jammed the last of her stuff and was reaching for her books when he ran back, heaved and burst through. I reached out, grabbed the chair and hurled it toward him and yelled, exasperated “Sit down!” to which he did, I moved over to him and with hands shaking said “You’re right; everything you’re saying is right mate- I’m sorry.” He looked at me and loosened his expression standing up and throwing his hands down,

“Thank you!” Answering the call from his mother he burst out the door and we turned to each other, exhausted. She insisted we see her damn horses before we leave, rushing through the house we made our way to the back stable. Trying to keep patience but still on the lookout I had finally gotten onto my friend who was on his way, I observed the moon and tried to think of what had been good in this night. I consoled her a little despite the literal pain in my ass and bitter sense of betrayal I couldn’t help eyeing in her calm disposition. A yell came from the driveway, “Get off my property you bastards” Toni hollered.

We moved out into the drive and were met with the shock of cars and people everywhere, Kayla sitting with her boyfriend in tears and the police standing around looking impatient. I’ve never had any real regard for the law, or anyone that enforces it, but when I saw the unimpressed expressions of the four officers a relief washed over me, I could already see the home stretch of this night ending. Assuring them all we had transport, they left in a rush, burning out onto the highway and pulling her along we floated down the drive, resting on the front lawn in silent shock. Cars pull in, people grasp us, someone burns the last of their cigarette on me but I have already resigned to the quiet of a country night. I get into the passenger seat beside my friend, murmuring “Hi. Thanks for this.” Hours later, I lie awake in my room all throughout the early morning beside the Birthday Girl, knowing this night could possibly never end. I draw an imaginary line. When I wake up she’s gone, but she’s borrowed a dress.

Revisiting the events of a night is not as simple as you expect, especially if it means risking your sanity and safety to speak to who ever you need information from. I spoke to Birthday Girl’s old friend Kayla who said she tried not to think about it, she had never apologized to anyone about it, and everyone simply moved and got on. Sitting here in this café, in a universe and a life completely removed from that night I am staring right at her smoking unaffected and wondering if she’ll ever know it was not about Penrith, gangs, drugs or violence, all the panic was her.

When I ask about why she thinks it all came together like it did, she meets my gaze half-lidded and holds her smoke pursed above her lips, ready to inhale,

“Shit happens.”

It starts as a fleeting encounter, an exchange of services; a little ‘bang for buck’ followed by a nice meal in the local fast food chain eatery on a Sunday night. A brush of hair from the neck, a flaunt of class, a thigh-gaping reveal of status. The sailor dazzling the midriff-baring working girl with his high-raised seaman’s cap and assortment of medals; a national hero. She throws her head back and laughs at his wooing promises for the night, the brave battles he has fought out at those long months away at sea. Gripping her now he has no need for indiscretion, it is all obvious what we are here for in this restaurant in the underbelly of Melbourne’s CBD. The lights of Melbourne’s Crown Casino flash in the distance, a symbol of every man’s luck and the long glitter-dusted night ahead. The hit of instant pleasure, we’re all in it for the speed.

I sit at a diagonal watching from behind the boy round the corner of the counter, as he shifts uncomfortably trying to ascertain a clear order while this soldier speaks his glory, with his hand roaming and the girl leans over, gripping the counter and spilling out an order unaffected and fast.

“Twodoublequarterpoundermealstwentypackofmcnuggetshoneymustardsaucechocolatethickshakestrawberryalsolargechocolaesundaethreeapplepie and diet coke for the drink. Ya got that?” The boy stands dumbfounded and stutters a menial reply. She tightens her mouth, there is no game here. She towers above him in her working girl get-up and over his shoulder gives a nod to one of the girls exiting the bathroom. I am surprised but not shocked to very quickly observe this as regular business grounds for the lower cities working girls. The boy says nothing. Running her hands up and down his torso she posits “He’s a sailor, a soldier” eyeing off other apathetic customers. Yeah, yeah.

Before the boy agape can speak he whips out his card and slides it across the counter, “Credit, please.” He flashes a half-smile.

Across the other side of the room I pick up my coffee cup and notice it’s near emptiness. I also notice a table of German businessmen on my left staring over their shoulders at me. Oh I don’t think so. I get up and make my way to the counter for another coffee. Coming into closer I can smell the light hint of fake tan as the girl leans gushing over her soldier and keeping a sly eye on both the cashier and the card.

The door had slammed closed when in the corner of my eye I caught sight of a band of youths, out on the town in their identical square-toed men’s dress shoes. I suppress a laugh.

a lazy sunday

i have sat very still all day, feeling as though I am in the set of the dreamers, sort of waiting for this day to begin and me to get off my arse and do something meaningful,

what a beautiful combination ! 'for you' and the bertolucci film, really wonderful and nostalgic. such a strange motion of manipulation, thought and desire. i love the characterisation and it feel as though it is part of my own memory and experience.

reminds me of when i fell in love with garrel and all his male counterparts in my world. i wanted to know him more and more. i kind of miss all of that and the real spark of adventure. i've kind of missed certain people i know i shouldn't be missing and it's not for any real reason other than they make me feel like living. it's weird, but things took a funny turn back there and it was to this exciting place and i didnt know where we'd end up. thrills, but totally internal.

i really miss a certain person now who i haven't spoken to in so long, in fact several of them. i just want to know what they've been doing, how they are feeling about the space between us and what they have been planning for the future. i want them to know they're always with me in thoughts and i feel them when i stop to speak. i love you all and the time will come.

oh i am listening to HIM again now, trying to discover what is so sexy in this that captivated me so long ago. that dark blues reverb is incredible.

SO, Welcome; welcome back me and anyone reading and hallogallo i and you and we are home.

It is a lovely sunday in sydney, there is sun outside but i am indoors watching its reflection in my bedroom mirror. i am supposed to be working towards a piece of writing due thursday that makes me feel ill in the stomach, but i am uninspirated. i have no idea what to interview anyone about. it all seems like such a total waste. i know i will find something, but its just so far removed from everything else i have been pursuing lately.

I am weighing up whether or not to go out tonight, as all I've really been doing is molding my arse into my bed and sitting here downloading music and stalking people on the internet. I'm getting a little worried. I have been battling a bit of a monster cold the past few days and have been discovering new films, music and picking up new programming skills. Good times, I assure.

I have been between Sydney and Melbourne the past 2 weeks as well as gigging with new band and keeping very musically preoccupied. It's always weird trying to return to 'normal' after working on something you love for so long. I have really been learning so much over the past weeks. For what I have gained though, I have also lost some. There are people and responsibilities to travel later this year that I have been putting on the back burner, so to speak.

I've also become totally obsessed with the Brazilian film 'Do Começo ao Fim' by Aluisio Abranches, director of The Three Marias. It captures a relationship between two half-brothers that is beyond intimate, it is a knowing like no other and this connection between them is without any greed or ideas of love, it is completely honest. I am in love with their mere being near one another. I haven't been able to catch all of the film online, only certain bits and pieces. I've got the subtitles though haha, slightly awkward without seeing the film but still, I will track this film and it will honestly be one of my favourites for a long time. Amazing, recommended if anyone can find it in their country !

So since the return home i am trying to keep productive and songwrite all i can etc. and work on my next gig with my lovely creepers as well as learn all i can about ableton live, logic pro, akai apc40 and guitar/roland ax synth that i can for my next melb visit and musical hangs with bec. i am on the lookout for an Epiphone Black Beauty 3 and will most likely be spending $500-600 big ones on one in the next month. damn.

In music research news, i have launched right into Kraut rock and furthering my Nigerian afrorock/funk collection, with the Nigeria Disco Funk Special and the African Screamer Contest compilations

I've been on the tail of everything dance and electronic lately, getting into it all myself so I've figured it is time to pursue each and every of the wide range of what moves me musically, which is a combination of funk, blues, folk, thrash, ambient, electronic, glitch, trip-hop and start my work towards what will ultimately be an eclectic mix of these all.

I went to an Apparat gig last week with Bec at a new club called New Guernica on Little Collins in Melbourne City. Really great place, amazing layout, had a lil chat with Apparat after the show who is a super lovely man, cheeky, smoky and very fun. It was really a next level experience and we were both totally inspired to start looking into the APC40 and start remixing some of Apparat/Moderat/Ellen Allien/Telefon Tel Aviv (and other general bpitchcontrol madness) and Aphex Twin. Got a whole lot o' Ableton to dig into, dayuuum. Pretty excited for the dubstep stuff that will follow though. It's getting darker in here, I think ol' Sydney is about to settle into night.

Also, completely randomly have been looking at interesting hotels and design stuff today, found the Null Stern Hotel, run by a bunch of Swiss artist dudes Frank and Patrik Riklin, whose tagline is "The only star is you" creating a totally eerie minimal environment based in an old nuclear bunker. There seems a static presence and rooms are shared with other guests at random. Day trip to Switzerland while I'm over maybe?
